Newtown...

Every morning across America, parents put their children on the school bus, car pool or drop them off at school on their way to work. While we know we have to let go of them, part of us wishes they would stay small in some way so we can shelter them from the "outside world", however this cannot be done. Children should NOT have to worry about anything more than learning, lunch, recess. Yes, I had a teenager (she is now 20), it is also about dating, driving, prom, boyfriends or girlfriends, etc.

As I watched the coverage of the shooting in Newtown, CT. So many feelings rushed over me, rage, hurt, fear, sadness. I saw the parent's some relieved at knowing that their children were safe and sound, and others whom lost children. While my heart breaks for every parent who lost a child, my heart rejoices in the heroic actions of the teachers whom saved many other children's lives. As I lie in bed, I thank God for my child, and the men and women who have called me "mom" over the years.

I also prayed for the men and women who rushed in as everyone was "rushing out" the many police officers, firefighters/EMT, dog handlers, SWAT. Responding to anything they see is often tragic, however this is beyond words. I also pray for the men and women who work in the Medical Examiner's office who while working may see an occasional child pass through their midst, having this many small lives lost at one time may shatter their stoic facade.

Being a mother, my heart breaks for the families who are living every parent's worst nightmare: having to bury their child. Parents should not outlive their children, period. Many of you are questioning God at this time, "Why?" the following article by a father of a child that was killed in Columbine may help us make some sense of this tragedy. I have copy and pasted this from a Facebook friend whom is a "Firearms Instructor" in Colorado:

A MUST READ... we need the lord above.

Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado, was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee's sub-committee.
What he said to our national leaders during this special session of Congress was painfully truthful. They were not prepared for what he was to say, nor was it received well. It needs to be heard by every parent, every teacher, every politician, every sociologist, every psychologist, and every so-called expert!

These courageous words spoken by Darrell Scott are powerful, penetrating, and deeply personal. There is no doubt that God sent this man as a voice crying in the wilderness. The following is a portion of the transcript:

"Since the dawn of creation there has been both good & evil in the hearts of men and women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel Joy Scott, and the deaths of that heroic teacher, and the other eleven children who died must not be in vain. Their blood cries out for answers." "The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field.

The villain was not the club he used. Neither was it the NCA, the National Club Association. The true killer was Cain, and the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain's heart. "In the days that followed the Columbine tragedy, I was amazed at how quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as the NRA.

I am not a member of the NRA. I am not a hunter. I do not even own a gun. I am not here to represent or defend the NRA - because I don't believe that they are responsible for my daughter's death. Therefore I do not believe that they need to be defended. If I believed they had anything to do with Rachel's murder I would be their strongest opponent."

"I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy-it was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room.
Much of the blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves. "I wrote a poem that expresses my feelings best. This was written way before I knew I would be speaking here today:"

Your words are empty air.
You've stripped away our heritage,
You've outlawed simple prayer.
Now gunshots fill our classrooms,
And precious children die.
You seek for answers everywhere,
And ask the question "Why?"

You regulate restrictive laws,
Through legislative creed.
And yet you fail to understand,
That God is what we need!

"Men and women are three-part beings. We all consist of body, soul, and spirit. When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our make-up, we create a void that allows evil, prejudice, and hatred to rush in and reek havoc. Spiritual influences were present within our educational systems for most of our nation's history. Many of our major colleges began as theological seminaries. This is a historical fact.

God, and in so doing, we open the doors to hatred and violence. And when something as terrible as Columbine's tragedy occurs politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws that contribute to erode away our personal and private liberties.

We do not need more restrictive laws." Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type of massacre. The real villain lies within our own hearts.

Political posturing and restrictive legislation are not the answers. The young people of our nation hold the key. There is a spiritual awakening taking place that will not be squelched! We do not need more religion. We do not need more gaudy television evangelists spewing out verbal religious garbage. We do not need more million dollar church buildings built while people with basic needs are being ignored.

We do need a change of heart and a humble acknowledgment that this nation was founded on the principle of simple trust in God!" "As my son Craig lay under that table in the school library and saw his two friends murdered before his very eyes, He did not hesitate to pray in school. I defy any law or politician to deny him that right!

I challenge every young person in America, and around the world, to realize that on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School prayer was brought back to our schools. Do not let the many prayers offered by those students be in vain. Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred disregard for legislation that violates your God-given right to communicate with Him. To those of you who would point your finger at the NRA- I give to you a sincere challenge.

Dare to examine your own heart before casting the first stone! My daughter's death will not be in vain! The young people of this country will not allow this to happen.

"When Guns Are Outlawed....The Outlaws Will Have Guns" this is a bumper sticker. It is becoming truer by the minute. The people whom commit crime with a firearm, think they are above the law. I am not talking about the shopkeeper, the homeowner whom while defending his property shot an thief, or would be thief. I am talking about the men and women who have obtained firearms illegally, and use them for illegal purposes. Responsible firearm owners are NOT the problem.

Day of Infamy...

The USS Arizona Memorial grew out of wartime desire to establish some sort of memorial at Pearl Harbor to honor those who died in the attack. Suggestions for such a memorial began in 1943, but it wasn't until 1949, when the Territory of Hawaii established the Pacific War Memorial Commission, that the first real steps were taken to bring it about.*

FDR stated that, December 7th was a day that would go down in history as a "Day of Infamy," maybe it has, maybe it has not. I choose to think that "We" as Americans who have forgotten many things lately should NEVER forget the Men and Women who fight and fought for us so bravely.

Yesterday was December 7th, and when I asked some people what is special about the day many looked at me puzzled. Yesterday, was the 71st anniversary of the bombing at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In less the time it takes us to wait in the drive thru at a fast food restaurant, over 2,000 men died. It puzzles me that we are raising our children to forget these "anniversaries" exist, but to remember facts such as who has the highest scoring percentage in baseball, football, hockey, basketball or soccer.

"Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it," by George Santayana resonates today with me so much. Have we forgotten what is important? Have we forgotten the lessons that WWI, WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, Desert Storm taught us? Did the men and women who fought and lost their lives in these wars, do it all for naught? Have we forgotten that we, the UNITED STATES of AMERICA is still the best place to live on earth? Maybe when all of us, begin an honest dialogue about the past, our children will never repeat what has happened in the past.

While there are those who claim that the America of today is better than the one of yesteryear, is it, really? Our children are spoiled with technology, they are overweight, have Type 2 diabetes, bulimia, anorexia, and have a myriad of self esteem problems because we have forgotten that being a public figure is an honor, not a given. We have forgotten that Sunday is a "family day", the time that we spend with our families, eating, talking, laughing, playing, most of all loving. Playing outside was a given on any day, "being bored" was a reason for you cleaning, dusting, raking, or doing chores because you said it to your mom. Don't laugh, I only said it once to my mom, that day I ended up polishing every piece of furniture in our house, when my friends came to the door to ask if I could come out and play, they were told, "No I'm sorry she has chores." Believe me playing outside is much better than polishing furniture any day of the week.

I was raised by a Marine my dad served during WWII, he like many other men and women saw things that even today still haunt them. My dad from the time I was very young until the day he died, always took time to look at OUR flag, the one that so many have shed their blood and lives for so that we, the UNITED STATES of AMERICA can live as a republic.

So today as you go about your busy day, when you see an older person today proudly wearing their VFW or American Legion jacket or hat, walk up to them, shake their hand, and day "Thank You".

Charity Begins at Home...???!!!

DOESN'T MAKE SENSE, DOES IT:  The homeless go without eating. Elderly go without needed medicines. The mentally ill go without treatment. Troops go without proper equipment. Veterans go without benefits that we promised. Yet we donate billions to other countries, and excessive immigration before helping our own first?????

This question was posted as a "share" on my Facebook page this morning, and  it really hit home, since Thanksgiving was a few days ago.... Isn't there an old saying that states, "Charity begins at home"? Or have I aged so much that at 50 I have lost some of my memory...I know, I know age is just a number, it is how one feels about said number that makes all the difference.

Then can someone please tell me why we have veterans who are without shelter (yes, I do understand that for some it is their choice because of PTSD and other problems that they returned from the war with) while we have illegal immigrants living in government housing? Does it make sense to you that a man or woman whom wore a uniform is living in a box, abandoned building, or homeless shelter while there are government housing projects in every city being built for illegal immigrants? I think we need to house our veterans in these abodes while the immigrants live on the streets.

While many senior citizens go without medicine or food month after month, I worked as a grocery store cashier for a few years and watched many senior citizens, go through my checkout with barely enough to keep a person alive for a week, let alone a month. Our seniors deserve our respect, and do NOT deserve to hear a politician say, "We need to cut out social programs like Social Security and  Medicare..." they have enough on their plates without politicians threatening them at every turn.

Many of the "homeless" which are on our streets suffer from mental illness. Paranoia, Schizophrenia, Bi-Polar, Depression and PTSD are real illnesses. The men and women who suffer from these illnesses whom live on the streets have fallen through the system, mainly because of something called "red tape" and the fact that most insurance policies including medicaid and medicare cover only the basic eight to ten weeks of treatment. Without follow up and continuing care, many fall through the cracks. Also they way many of us feel about Mental Health has made it a taboo subject, but yet we advertise for bladder control, erectile dysfunction, migraines, periods, with a few tasteful advertisements regarding depression, and bi-polar disease. By the way, I talk to myself sometimes, especially when I am trying to remember something, I also sing along to the music in the grocery store...I am NOT crazy!!!

Cut a soldiers pay??? Cut a soldiers retirement benefits??? NEVER!!!  When you hear the words "Defense Budget" they are NOT talking guns, tanks, ships, or jets; they are talking about the pay rate of the soldier who defends our flag, our rights, and our FREEDOM.  Did you know that many of the families of the men and women who defend us live under the poverty level, that many receive WIC and food stamps? Did you know that many of the base hospitals no longer treat the families of our soldiers, but ship them to clinics in town such as "NavCare" because the powers that be have cut the "Defense Budget" so much it can barely serve our soldiers. Many of our veterans have to beg for benefits through the VA, and even then they have to pay out of pocket. NO man or woman who has worn the uniform of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine or Coats Guard should ever have to pay for anything once they no longer wear that uniform.

This country sure has got its priorities messed up. If you agree with anything I have said in this blog, pass it along.

p.s.:  To those of you who REFUSE to get a job because flipping burgers at McD's, White Castle, BK, or working as a "dishwasher", "car prep", "grocery store clerk/cashier",  is beneath you, it isn't  If you can afford to drive Mercedes, Cadillac, Audi, Volvo and dress in all the "newest" fashions, while adorning your hands, necks, and ears with enough gold & diamonds you DO NOT need public assistance. You need a kick in the butt and to find a job, any job.

WHAT DO OUR CHILDREN NEED???

To thrive a child needs love, food, clothes, a roof over their heads.

They do not need: iPod, iPhone, 40" flat screens, cable with all the channels/dvr, designer clothing, handbags, plastic surgery, a new car.

They need to learn responsibility, period. That means they know that every action has a reaction. That for every thing that they do correctly will bring laud & adoration (remember potty training?); for every thing they do wrong brings punishment (time out? corner time?). This is called: PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.

If you fail to teach your children responsibility in spending, living, honesty how do you as a parent expect them to leave your home at age eighteen, go to college, get good grades, graduate, get a job?  Responsibility is taught at home. It is not up to the teachers, administration or professors to teach this to your child. It begins when they are toddlers, picking up their toys is not a hard chore; they may not do it to your specification, however if all the toys end up put away, then they have learned something. As youngsters, have them make their beds daily, keep their rooms picked up, hang up the towels after showering/bathing. It may not be the way we as parents want it to look, however they are learning to pick up after themselves. These small things will give you more time to do something you as a mom or dad want to do (i.e.: read a chapter of a book, call a friend, answer an email, etc). Chores never hurt any one of my friends, in fact it was always more fun doing chores at my friends house than it was at mine, and vice-versa.

I have children, my children know what it is to work. They are all personally responsible for themselves. Does that mean I haven't spoiled them at Christmas or their birthday? No, it means that when they did wrong they were punished; when they did right they were rewarded.

We are growing a generation of children who are ungrateful, lazy, whiny, brats.

What are you as a parent going to do about it to change this trend?

SPORTSMANSHIP...What are we teaching our children??

Every morning I listen to "Mike and Mike in the Morning" on ESPN. This morning the topic of major discussion was "sportsmanship" in regards to what happened to QB Matt Cassel of the KC Chiefs, or more importantly what happened after he was sacked, laid writhing on the field in obvious pain. While I know that football players are constantly compared to the gladiators that once fought in the coliseum of Rome, are we reverting back to those times? I would have thought by now we have evolved...okay maybe I am asking way to much of the fans. I do understand being a "die hard" fan. But jeering and booing a player that has been injured on a play, continuing to do so while a player is hurt, is POOR SPORTSMANSHIP!!!

I have been to many sports venues, including The Carrier Dome, Yankee Stadium, Shea Stadium, Progressive Field, Lucas Oil Stadium, Busch Stadium, and have heard the boos, hisses, when certain players and teams take the field, and have been in places where it has gone from complete pandemonium to dead silence in a matter of moments when a players was injured on the field of play. What happened Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium amazes me. Granted that KC hasn't had a winning team in a very long time, makes this venue a little more apt to erupt, however what happened Sunday has shocked many people in the sports world including Ron Jaworski, Mike Ditka, to name a couple. The following is an excerpt of what tackle Eric Winston had to say about what happened:

"It's sickening," Chiefs tackle Eric Winston said. "I've never, ever -- and I've been in some rough times on some rough teams -- I've never been more embarrassed in my life to play football than at that moment right there. I get emotional about it because these guys, they work their butts off. Matt Cassel hasn't done anything to you people. Hey, if he's not the best quarterback, he's not the best quarterback, and that's OK, but he's a person. And he got knocked out in a game, and we've got 70,000 people cheering that he got knocked out. We are not gladiators and this is not the Roman Colosseum. ... We've got a lot of problems as a society if people think that's OK."

Now my question is, "What are we teaching our children?" in regards to sportsmanship. Children learn from example. When they are young we dress them in our team colors, we take them to games, we watch the games on television with them. When they are old enough they sign up for t-ball, softball, little league, pee-wee football, hockey, etc., we also teach them as the coaches do that you may not win every game. Whether we win or lose you will shake the other teams hand, and say "good game". We also teach our children when in the stands, that while 'booing" is not polite, it does happen; when a player gets hurt on the field you say a prayer that he/she will walk away with minimum of injury.

What do we teach our youngsters who either watched Sunday's game or have seen the replays? Do we say, "It's okay to jeer, boo, hiss" at an injured player? Or do we teach them to quietly say a prayer for the player and hope he walks off the field?

A Little Boy's Voice...

Many of us have been watching the candidates and their compatriots praise one another in regards to one thing or another. While I did watch one or two things in RNC and DNC, no one but I will be in the voting booth with me when I "pull the lever" so to speak.
One of the many things both candidates have been discussing (I use that term loosely) is the "Gay Marriage" issue. While my own personal opinion is "it is no one's business" whom I love or marry, this issue is a hot topic for both sides. I was raised that marriage is between two people who love one another, while my parents and my faith did not say it, the meant between a man and a woman. I am a heterosexual woman with many friends who are in the LGBT community.
While reading down the news feed on my Facebook account this morning I found this video of the son of one of my friends, he is seven years old, and adorable his is fearful that his "mommy's" are going to be taken away from him. He is articulate, and makes a good argument for each and every one of us to think about what "marriage and family" are about. Thank you for making the video, and for sharing it.
At seven, our children should not have to worry whether or not one parent is going to be taken away from them because of the way a politician thinks or feels. He should be thinking about school, or his favorite book, or what he did in school that day, not what a politician is saying on television. Our children have enough to worry about with teen pregnancy, anorexia, bulimia, drug use, and bullying being the major cause for teen suicide in our country.
Maybe it is time for each and every one of us to stop pointing fingers, stop meddling, and stop being so close minded about what others do. As Jesus asked the crowd, "Which one of you is clean enough to cast the first stone?" I for one am not. I do not judge, or wish to be judged because of how I think or feel.

"...You didn't create that..."

I have been seething for the past month or so since I heard President Obama utter those words at a factory with  union workers on one of his campaign stops. Another thing Mr. Obama, union workers were not the only ones that built this country, ordinary men and women did also.

WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK CREATED SMALL BUSINESS' MR. PRESIDENT??? Surely not you or your ancestors. Sure as hell was NOT the government. It was the small business owner who took a loan, albeit, a SBA (Small Business Administration) loan to get their business started, but the owners and workers of these small business' made these business' NOT YOU or the GOVERNMENT!!!

I was reading a book, "Images of America COLUMBUS ITALIANS", when I came across a picture of the DiPaolo Food Shoppe. This was a small Italian grocery store in my mother's neighborhood that opened in 1915, it was the local shop where one could buy their cheese, meats, and provisions. That small family owned and operated food store would become a very successful $75-million food distribution empire. YOU DID NOT CREATE IT MR. OBAMA, Mr. & Mrs. DiPaolo did!!!

Across America there are thousands more of these mom & pop operations that began with a little bit of money and a dream.  The government is slowly killing these business' by over taxing them, making them buy expensive insurance products that do not cover much in the way of medical care.

You Mr. Obama created a mess with your promises of "CHANGE" when you were elected in 2008, with your promises of lowering the debt, it is now in the trillions; lowering fuel prices (approx $1.85/gal in 2008, $3.85/gal now); pushing through a $500-billion energy bill that former President Bush did not approve because of the business (Solyndra) being a money pit; you cut Medicare (when our seniors can barely afford prescriptions) to pay for Medicade. The alumni at Columbia Law do not remember you ever attending class, let alone receiving your Juris Doctor: your wife lost her license to practice law for accepting a bribe. You both deserve to be deported from the White House, but before you go, write the American taxpayers a check for Mrs. Obama's extravagant clothes & vacations, the girls salaries which they did not earn. Turn in your U.S. passport, you gained it illegally (have to show a BIRTH CERTIFICATE to obtain one which you obviously did not). Forget about taking Secret Service protection with you when you leave the White House, you can deal with the fallout you caused.

One last thing, Mr. Obama quit criticizing Mr. Romney, while you were busy trying to figure out first grade math, Mr. Romney's father was marching in the streets to bring equality to all. Mr. Romney is not perfect, however he has faced many more challenges than you have in his life, he knows how to read a balance sheet, and believes in LESS GOVERNMENT not more.

BUY AMERICAN -- AUGUST 1st -- SEPTEMBER 1st

This article was forwarded to me by a good friend. It is very enlightening just how much comes from China these days. So as the article states, let's "Buy American" for 30 days to send China a message, that America does NOT need their goods.

AUGUST 1st to Sept. 1st
Did y'all see Diane Sawyer's special report? They removed ALL items from a typical, middle class family's home that were not made in the USA .
There was hardly anything left besides the kitchen sink. Literally. During the special they showed truckloads of items - USA made - being brought in to replace everything and talked about how to find these items and the difference in price etc..

It was interesting that Diane said if every American spent just $64 more than normal on USA made items this year, it would create something like 200,000 new jobs!

I WAS BUYING FOOD THE OTHER DAY AT WALMART and ON THE LABEL OF SOME PRODUCTS IT SAID 'FROM CHINA'; FOR EXAMPLE THE "OUR FAMILY" BRAND OF THE MANDARIN ORANGES SAYS RIGHT ON THE CAN 'FROM CHINA', I WAS SHOCKED SO FOR A FEW MORE CENTS I BOUGHT THE LIBERTYGOLD BRAND OR THE DOLE SINCE IT'S FROM CALIFORNIA

Are we Americans as dumb as we appear --- or --- is it that we just do not think? The Chinese, knowingly and intentionally, export inferior and even toxic products and dangerous toys and goods to be sold in American markets .

70 % of Americans,.. believe that the trading privileges afforded to the Chinese should be suspended .

Why do you need the government to suspend trading privileges? You Can..DO IT YOURSELF, AMERICA!!

Simply look on the bottom of every product you buy, and if it says 'Made in China ' or ' PRC' ( and that now includes Hong Kong ), simply choose another product, or none at all. You will be amazed at how dependent you are on Chinese products , and you will be equally amazed at what you can do without.

Who needs plastic eggs to celebrate Easter? If you must have eggs, use real ones and benefit some American farmer. Easter is just an example. The point is do not wait for the government to act . Just go ahead and assume control on your own.

THINK ABOUT THIS: If 200 million Americans each refuse to buy just $20 of Chinese goods, that's a billion dollar trade imbalance resolved in our favor ...fast!!

Most of the people who have been reading about this matter are planning on implementing this on Aug . 1st and continue it until Sept. 1st . That is only one month of trading losses, but it will hit the Chinese for 1/12th of the total, or 8%, of their American exports. Then they might have to ask themselves if the benefits of their arrogance and lawlessness were worth it.

Remember, August 1st to Sept. 1st!  START NOW.

Send this to everybody you know. Let's show them that we are Americans and NOBODY can take us for granted. If we can't live without cheap Chinese goods for one month out of our lives, WE DESERVE WHAT WE GET!

Lawmaker Berates Double Amputee

It is my guess that some members of Congress find veterans second class citizens. Rep. Joseph Walsh-IL(R) is doing his best to get reelected in his district, running against him is a combat veteran, who risked her life fighting for the belief that all people should be free. In that battle she lost her legs, while this would deter many, it hasn't dampened her spirit, nor her fight for freedom.

My guess is that Rep. Walsh cannot find a single thing out of place in this veteran's background to cast dispersion upon so he uses her own words against her, the ones where she explains to her would be constituents how she lost her legs, and why she feels she must runs for public office. She is being "honest & upfront" about her disability, which means she openly talks about how she lost her legs.

I guess Rep. Walsh was raised by wolves, and never learned the following golden rule: "If you cannot say something nice, don't say anything at all."

No Minors Policy....Where Are the Parents???

I just read an article at Syracuse.com* about a young juvenile who was arrested in possession of a sawed off shotgun, shells, and a bad temper , so bad a temper he was arrested for resisting arrest. The mall he was arrested at has a "NO MINORS" without an accompanying adult**. Now my question is where was the accompanying adult when this boy knocked out another patron, dropped shotgun shells, ran from mall officers (I am not talking about "Paul Blart: Mall Cop") as well as Syracuse Police Officers whom patrol the mall in the evenings.

Was this a "gang initiation"? Retaliation for the latest shooting? A dare? Given that many of our youths think that being a "gang banger" is cool because of what they see on television, in music videos, and in the movies. It is NOT!!! It is a life of crime, and punishment. When this young man goes into court, we are going to hear about how "bad" he has it at home. Maybe we should start charging the parents as well as the juvenile offenders. Maybe this would be a WAKE UP call to all children/young adults.

Yes I do believe it takes a village to raise a child. It also takes time and energy to discipline children, it is obvious that too many homes today are "one parent" and the main parent is working to keep a roof over the families head. My generation (I was born in 1962) had very few "one parent families"; okay so maybe discipline was left up to mom (or dad) however what you didn't hear from one of them you heard from the other, then you heard it from your friends parents, and then your family. I have great respect for single parents whom raise their children to become productive adults, who graduate high school, a trade program, technical school, or college.

Fast & Furious...

Okay so we all have heard or seen the movies "The Fast & The Furious", however this is NOT a fictional movie where the hero drives away with the car. This is REAL LIFE where a Border Patrol Agent, Brian Terry was gunned down with weapons sold by the American government to the Mexican government and then distributed to the drug kingpins. What were they thinking????

Brian Terry was doing his JOB when he was gunned down. He was killed in the line of duty, he was protecting the border of the UNITED STATES of AMERICA. Still no one has been brought to justice. Why you ask, because Eric Holder, the Attorney General thinks this is a laughing matter. IT ISN'T Mr. Holder. You , your office, your cronies are RESPONSIBLE for this man's death. You NEED to come clean about your role in this. WE THE PEOPLE demand it of you.

PLEASE pass this onto your friends. We need answers.
